Tech News:What Mattered in Energy Innovation This Year -2012

Workers drill for shale gas in Pennsylvania. The emergence of access
to shale gas in the U.S.—and the low natural gas prices that
followed—has created an extra hurdle for renewables.

Although renewable energy made impressive advances this year, its
impact has been dwarfed by the changes caused by the surplus of cheap,
abundant natural gas made possible by hydrofracturing—fracking—of
shale deposits. It will also be hard for renewables to equal the
impact of shale gas in the coming years.

As utilities shift electricity production from coal plants to natural
gas ones, carbon dioxide emissions have dropped to levels not seen for
20 years. In China, the government has set ambitious goals to scale up
fracking and shale gas production there as well.

Similar drilling technology has led to a surge of oil production in
the United States that could have it rivaling the production of oil in
Saudi Arabia. It's led to credible estimates that within a couple of
decades—with the help of rigorous fuel economy standards—North America
could produce as much energy as it consumes.

Shale gas is having a major impact on renewable sources of energy as
well. For example, as a result of cheap natural gas, some companies
that had been founded to produce biofuels from renewable sources—and
entrepreneurs who had dedicated much of their lives to developing such
technologies—have given up and turned instead to making fuels with
natural gas. At the same time, cheap natural gas has made it far more
difficult for renewable sources of energy to compete.

Meanwhile, the prospects for solar, wind, biofuels, and advanced
vehicles took a decidedly bearish turn this year.

Solar companies went bankrupt left and right. Electric vehicles sales
were less than expected and A123, a once-promising advanced battery
company, declared bankruptcy and was auctioned off at a fraction of
the amount that had been invested in it.

Yet incremental progress is being made. Hybrid vehicle technology is
now often profitable. There have also been some developments in
improving internal combustion engines. Efficient internal combustion
engines could be cheaper than batteries and electric motors, and so
work their way into mainstream sales faster than electric vehicles,
having a bigger impact on fossil fuel consumption over the next
decade.

Sachin Tendulkar retires from ODIs: first and last Match with Pakistan all records in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar has retired from ODI cricket. Tendulkar finishes an
illustrious career in the 50-over format, having played 463 ODIs,
scored 18,426 runs and made 49 centuries, each of them a world record.
His last ODI was against Pakistan in Dhaka during the Asia Cup, where
he made a half-century in India's victory.

"I have decided to retire from the One Day format of the game," he
said in a statement. "I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of
being part of a World Cup winning Indian team. The preparatory process
to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right
earnest. I would like to wish the team all the very best for the
future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their
unconditional support and love over the years."

Tendulkar made his ODI debut on his first international tour, in 1989,
against Pakistan in Gujranwala, where he got a duck. He scored his
first half-century in his ninth ODI and made an immediate impact when
promoted to open the batting in 1994, in an ODI against New Zealand in
Auckland, where he smashed 82 in 49 balls. His first century took 79
ODIs to arrive but he kept piling them on with remarkable consistency.

Tech Buzz: What is a TV Aspect Ratio?

What is a TV Aspect Ratio?

When referring to televisions, the aspect ratio essentially tells us the shape of a TV image - and is also used to refer to the shape of our televisions.

The ratio that it refers to is the width of the image divided by the height.

TV Aspect Ratio - 4:3
4:3 TV Aspect Ratio

For those of you old enough to remember (ok, we're not actually going that far back!), the traditional shape of a television screen was almost square. It was slightly wider than it was high, but not by much.

This TV screen shape was designed to match the shape of the images that were sent to our TVs, and it was known as a "4 by 3" image - also known as 4:3 or 4x3.

This means that the image was 4 units wide and 3 units high. The physical size of the units doesn't matter - it could be 4 inches by 3 inches, 4 feet by 3 feet or 8 feet by 6 feet - but the relationship between the width and the height is always 4 across and 3 down.

As the actual size of the image doesn't matter, it is often easier to express this 4:3 relationship as a ratio. This means that if we divide the width by the height, then 4 ÷ 3 = 1.33.

So 1.33 (or 1.33:1) is said to be the aspect ratio of a 4:3 TV image or television.

You will often find the aspect ratio referred to as either of these two numbers, but they both mean the same thing. When you do see these terms, then it is just telling you the basic shape of an image or screen.

What is a 16:9 Widescreen TV Aspect Ratio?

As with all technology, times change and the boffins try and improve on what we already have. Therefore, it was thought that this traditional 4:3 aspect ratio used in television viewing could be improved.

Widescreen TV Aspect Ratio
16:9 Widescreen TV Aspect Ratio

Although originally 1.33:1, the traditional aspect ratio of movies has for a long time been different to the 'square' images were used to seeing on our televisions. This meant the image shape was much wider than it was high. You can see this by the wide shape of the screen in a cinema or movie theater.

This wide image shape was thought to more closely reflect the way that our eyes worked - and so was a more natural way for us to see things.

With the introduction of HDTV and digital television, the result has been a slow but steady switch to 'widescreen' televisions.

The widescreen image we see on our TVs isn't quite the same shape as they use in movies, but it is similar.

The actual shape that has become standard for HDTVs is a "16 by 9" image. This is the standard HD aspect ratio. As with a 4:3 image, this means that the picture is 16 units wide and 9 units high - therefore much wider in comparison to the height.

You're probably way ahead of me now, but we can also express this widescreen image as a ratio.

Therefore, 16 ÷ 9 = 1.77. This number is usually rounded up to 1.78 - so when you see a reference to 1.78 or 1.78:1, then you know that the image or TV screen will be widescreen - or 16:9.

Movie News: 'Dabangg 2' Collections on the first day

Arbaaz Khan's directorial debut 'Dabangg 2' has opened to mainly positive reviews. The film has done well at the box office on its opening day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh's tweets about the film's collection, "#Dabangg2 *actuals* Fri 21.10 cr nett."
He further says that the film's first day's business is not likely to cross Ek Tha Tiger's collection on the opening day, "#Dabangg2 1st day will be lower than #EkThaTiger 1st day [15 Aug holiday]. ETT Day 2 was much lower [14.55 cr], since it was a working day."
The year 2012 has proved to be a good year for Salman Khan's film career. He has already given a superhit in the form of 'Ek Tha Tiger', 'Son of Sardaar', in which he did a cameo, also became a superhit.
Before the release of 'Dabangg 2', trade experts were predicting that the film will achieve good commercial success. It won't take more than one week to figure out whether the film has proved those experts right or wrong.

All about Who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?

Celebrating Srinivasa Ramanujan's 125th birthday, Google posted a doodle on its homepage. The doodle features a boy trying to solve some mathematical equations and geometrical figures, which form the letters of the word 'Google'. But who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?

Born on 22 December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. He was an autodidact. Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, Srinivasa Ramanujan came up with his own mathematical research in isolation.

Ramanujan was born in a poor Hindu Brahmin family. His introduction to formal mathematics began at age 10. He demonstrated a natural ability. By the age of 12, he mastered books on advanced trigonometry written by S. L. Loney. Ramanujan discovered theorems of his own.

On 14 July 1909, Ramanujan got married to Janaki Ammal, a ten-year old bride.

In 1912-1913, he sent out samples of his theorems to three academics at the University of Cambridge. His brilliance was recgonised and he was invited to visit and work at Cambridge. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

On 26 April 1920, Ramanujan died of illness, malnutrition, and possibly liver infection at the age of 32.

In December 2011, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 2012 as the 'National Mathematical year' as a tribute to maths wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan. Singh also declared December 22, the birthday of Ramanujan, as 'National Mathematics Day.'

"A genius like Ramanujan would shine bright even in the most adverse of circumstances, but we should be geared to encourage and nurture good talent which may not be of the same calibre as that of Ramanujan", Singh had once said.

It is believed that a biography of Ramanujan named "The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan," written by Professor Robert Kanigel has made Ramanujan well known to the public at large all over the world.

Along with CV Raman and Subramanyam Chandrashekhar (both Nobel laureates), Srinivasa Ramanujan is said to be among the three great men of science and mathematics that Tamil Nadu and India have given to the world of modern times.

Sharing his thoughts on Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great mathematician, after whom the year was named as the National Year of Mathematics, Dr Kalam said, "Ramanujan lived for 33 years only. But he was an exceptional mathematician."

Music:'Gangnam Style' is Collins dictionary's word of the year

After becoming the most-watched video ever on YouTube, Korean singer Psy's pop sensation "Gangnam Style" has now booked a place in popular culture with recognition from a renowned British dictionary.

"Gangnam Style" has been named among the Collins dictionary's words of the year along with "mummy porn", "fiscal cliff" and "Romneyshambles". Psy's song was the dictionary's word for November - when his horse dance video became YouTube's most popular clip, 'Mirror News' reported.

"Mummy porn" became April's word of the year as the erotic novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey' was published during that month and became an instant bestseller. Defeated presidential candidate Mitt Romney made in it July after critics branded his visit to London a "Romneyshambles".

"Jubilympics" was June's word, while "Games Makers" was August's due to the volunteers who made the Olympic event in UK a success. Each word was submitted by the public to the on-line dictionary at www.collinsdictionary.com/submission.

However, the publishers said not all 12 words had the staying power to make it to the print edition. "We are astounded by how quickly new trends form. Choosing one word for 2012 didn't match the pace of change," Ian Brookes, consulting editor at Collins, said.

"Choosing just one word for 2012 didn't match the pace at which our language is changing, so we selected one popular word to represent each month from the whole range of those submitted," he said.

Words that made it the dictionary this year are 'Broga' for January, 'Legbomb' in February, 'Eurogeddon' (March), 'Mummy Porn' (April), 'Zuckered' for May. 'Jubilympics' was word of the year for June, 'Romneyshambles' for July, 'Games Makers' for August, '47 per cent' in September, 'Superstorm' (October), 'Gangnam Style' for November and 'Fiscal cliff' for December.

Business Update: Investors eyeing BRIC countries in 2013

With a whiff of global recovery in the air and central bank liquidity abundant, investors in 2013 are packing their bags for China, fellow 'BRICs' Brazil and Russia, long-dormant Japan and even some Mediterranean sun. Of course, seeking consensus on the top country destinations for the year ahead is hardly an exact science.

Often the simplest game is to avoid what did best the previous year, look at the subdued valuations of laggards and bet on a catch-up depending on the economic cycle. Rank underlying economic growth rates, factor in policy shifts and you're away. And after five years of stomach-churning global crises, the more conservative western money managers won't even think of leaving home without at least some basic 'security checks' - let alone set off for exotic new frontiers.

So the basis of most 2013 forecasts are the pretty critical assumptions that the euro won't collapse, the United States will dodge its looming "fiscal cliff" of tax and spending crunches, and that China's economy has averted a nosedive in growth. If none of that sounds an alarm, and you don't want to hunker down at home, then this year's tidal wave of central bank liquidity and money-printing from central banks in Washington, London, Frankfurt and Tokyo is waiting to be surfed.

Reuters global stock market polls yet again tell a story of BRIC rebirth. After two years in which the stock markets of the four emerging giants underperformed even those of bailed-out Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Italy and Spain - despite vastly superior economic growth rates - the old ploy of hoovering up what's been beaten down seems unshakeable. China's long-suffering Shanghai Composite - one of the few major bourses still in the red this year, down 25 per cent from early 2011 and still less than half its 2007 peak - is easily the favourite destination for money managers, with median forecast gains of 17 per cent.

Internet NEWS:30-Year-Old Man Gets $ 45,500 To Change Last Name

It's not all that uncommon for someone to change their last name,
perhaps when they get married, or become a famous movie star. But one
US entrepreneur had a different reason to change his name. He has
agreed to a new identity for a year to whatever name the highest
bidder wanted in an online auction.

So 30-year-old Jason Sadler from Florida will become Jason
HeadsetsDotCom on January 1 after the website Headsets.com agreed to
pay Sadler $45,500 to legally change his name. "Throughout my life
I've had three separate last names, none of which have carried any
real meaning for me or my sense of identity," Sadler said on his
website, buymylastname.com.

"So earlier this year when my mom let me know she'd be going through a
divorce, it occurred to me that shedding my last name might actually
make a lot of sense for me," said Sadler, who was then inspired to
sell his last name through an online auction that allowed any company
who wanted their business name as his new last name to submit a bid.

on November 1 and ended on Wednesday at midnight, with the highest
bidder being Headsets.com, which states on its website that it is
America's leading provider of office telephone earpieces. Sadler said
on his website that he "will now become a walking, talking billboard"
for the company, and is "ready and willing" to expand upon any further
marketing ideas for an additional cost.

"We've done some wacky marketing things ourselves in the past," Mike
Faith, president of Headsets.com, told CNN about Sadler's idea that he
said is a perfect fit for the company. Twenty-five businesses
participated in the auction, with Headsets.com and PawnUp.com battling
it out until the very end.

Sadler said he will donate 10 percent of the money earned from the
auction to a non-profit organization called Cheerful Givers, which is
committed to giving less fortunate children gifts on their birthdays
and holidays. He will use the rest for future marketing ideas.
Self-branding is not a new concept for Sadler. In 2009, he started an
advertising campaign where he raised more than $66,000 by wearing
different company t-shirts.

Gujarat post-poll survey: Narendra Modi-led BJP set to win 129-141 seats

this report from http://m.ibnlive.com/wsf/article_mobilePageNew.php?id=311351&sid=37

Narendra Modi will continue to lord over Gujarat for the next five years as he is all set to score a hat-trick of electoral victories and lead the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) back to power. According to the post-poll survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) and seat projections by Chennai Mathematical Institute Director Rajeeva Karandikar, Modi will steamroll the opposition and become the chief minister of Gujarat once again.

The post-poll survey of 3755 persons at 239 locations in 60 constituencies in Gujarat shows that Modi is going to better the 2002 and 2007 results and win by a very handsome margin. While the BJP will have a vote percentage of 48, the party is going to win 129-141 seats (the party had won 117 in 2007 in the 182-member Assembly) with the Congress trailing far behind with 36 per cent of the votes and its worst show in the state with only 37 to 45 seats (the party had won 59 in 2007). The other smaller parties would garner 16 per cent of the votes and end up with 4 to 10 seats (others had won six seats which included three by the NCP, one by the JD(U) and two Independents in 2007).

What is surprising that even though the BJP is losing one per cent of the votes as compared to the 2007 elections, the party is set to win at least 12 seats more than last time. The Congress's votes too is down two per cent from the 2007 figure and the other smaller parties are also losing four per cent votes all of which is being cornered by Keshubahi Patel's Gujarat Parivartan Party, which didn't exist in 2007.

The Modi regime is riding on a pro-incumbency wave with a majority of the voters in favour of re-electing him. In fact, the BJP is way ahead of the Congress in all the regions of the state. Despite Keshubhai Patel's GPP being strong in the Leuva Patel-dominated Saurashtra, it is the BJP which is getting the maximum votes there. In North Gujarat, the BJP gets 54 per cent of the votes and it is only Central Gujarat where the Congress comes within touching distance of its political opponent.

Sport News:India can grab the No. 1 spot in T20s

India have a great chance of climbing to the top of the ICC T20I championship table if they manage to win all four matches scheduled to be played against England and Pakistan before the end this year. India are all set to play England in a two-match Twenty20 International series, starting in Pune on Thursday, before squaring off against arch-rivals Pakistan, in another two-match series, commencing in Bangalore on December 25.

Victory in all four games for India, currently ranked third on the T20I table with 120 ratings points, will not only propel them to number one position with a gain of 12 rating points but will also open up a five-point lead over current table toppers, Sri Lanka. This will be the first time that India have a chance of making it to the No.1 spot in the T20I championship table since it was launched in October 2011.

But if India lose even one of the four matches, the best they can hope to end 2012 is at the number two place, while losing all four could mean slipping down to as low as seventh position with 106 ratings points. England and Pakistan could hope to push up a place if they win their games against India.

Meanwhile, South Africa could rise up to number two spot if they win the series against the New Zealand 3-0. But the final positioning for South Africa will be determined by the outcome of India's series against England and Pakistan.
